Being a State Alchemist is not an easy occupation, particularly if you are quite diminutive in stature, as there is always the chance that no one would take you seriously. In the case of Edward Elric, though, once they see the distinctive braided golden-blonde hair and the automail limbs, people would almost always immediately recognize him as the Fullmetal Alchemist.
Edward Elric is the perfect example of the worst things happening to people with the best of intentions. Edward and his brother threw themselves into an intense study of alchemy in the hopes of bringing their beloved mother back from the dead, after she succumbed to an illness. Sadly, their attempt met with massive failure and instead of bringing their beloved mother back, both lost significant portions of their body (with Alphonse losing the most) due to the Law of Equivalent Exchange.
The Fullmetal Alchemist is widely known for being someone you do not want to cross, unless you are supremely skilled in combat alchemy, or you are tired of drawing breath. His unnatural skill coupled with his savage temper could easily unnerve most opponents, although his rage is no match for his dedication when it comes to protecting those he cares for.
